ACRYLAMIDE-FREE FLOCCULANT

The alternative to conventional pFM:
M-FLOC® DAF 800


The addition of synthetic, high molecular weight pFMs to improve sedimentation and dewatering is state of the art in the treatment of wash water from sand and gravel washing. These contain a small amount of acrylamide (unpolymerized due to the manufacturing process) as a residual monomer.
The EU Drinking Water Regulation sets strict limits for acrylamide, which can be easily complied with using conventional pFMs with drinking water approval when used once.

As wash water is recycled several times in practice, with a pFM being added to each cycle, acrylamide can accumulate in the treated water and, if treated recycled water leaks into the groundwater, the specified limit value may be exceeded.

M-FLOC® DAF 800 contains methacrylamide as a residual monomer and scores with the following advantages:

 completely acrylamide-free
 very clear supernatant after sedimentation
 only minimally slower in sedimentation compared to acrylamide-containing pFMs
 equires far lower dosing quantities than other acrylamide-free pFMs (e.g. starch-based)

Environmental compatibility of M-FLOC® DAF 800 compared to conventional pFM

In the absence of limit values in the EU Drinking Water Regulation, the PNEC value (predicted no effort concentration) is used.
This refers to the predicted concentration of a substance that is generally hazardous to the environment, up to which there are no effects on the environment:

  • PNEC value for acrylamide in fresh water: 0.032
  • PNEC value for methacrylamide in fresh water: 2
